HASAN ALI SHAH AGA KHAN I (1233-1298/1817-1881)

The Imam Hasan Ali Shah was born in 1804 in Kahak, Iran  to Shah Khalil Allah and Bibi Sarkara after his father  was killed in Yazd, Persia   during a brawl between some of his followers and local shopkeepers.

He was succeeded by his eldest son Hasan Ali Shah, also known as Muhammad Hasan, who became the 46th Imam. And succeeded to the Imamat at the age of 13 in 1817,After shaa Khalil Allah’s death, The young Imam and his mother moved to Qumm. his mother decided to go to the Qajar court in Tehran to Fath Ali Shah  to obtain justice for her husband’s death and  was eventually successful. Those who had been involved in the Shah Khalil Allah’s murder were punished.

king Fath Ali Shah also appointed him as governor of Qumm and bestowed upon him the honorific title of Aga Khan ,the title of Aga Khan was inherited by his successors  to the present Imam he was the first imam of Ismailis to bear the title of Aga Khan.later his mother  moved to India where she died in 1851. Until Fath Ali Shah’s death in 1834, the Imam Hasan Ali Shah enjoyed a quiet life and was held in high esteem at the Qajar court. to see the  further political, Imam migrated to Qandahar, Afghanistan in 1841,later proceeded to Sindh, continuing to offer his services to the British.In October 1844, Hasan Ali Shah left Sindh and  travelled to Karachi, Cutch, Kathiavar, and Calcutta, After arriving in Bombay in February 1846,eventually settling permanently in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1848.  Hasan Ali Shah continued to maintain a close relationship with the British who came to address Hasan Ali Shah as His Highness.

Imam  organized the community through a network of functionaries,mukhi and kamdia, in every Khoja jamat, who also possessed a Jamatkhana.he also attended jama’at-khana on special religious occasions and held a darbar every Saturday when in Bombay.he spent his final years in Bombay with occasional visits to Pune. Imam Hasan Ali Shah died in 1881 after an eventful Imamat of 64 years, and was buried at Hasanabad in Bombay. He was succeeded to the Imamat by his eldest son Aqa Ali Shah Aga Khan II.
